Americans want fewer prisoners. What’s art have to do with it?

A unique year-old pilot music program inside Pennsylvania’s largest prison needs funding to keep going. Its early success and relationship with the state offers a look inside our appetite for — and the limits of — a new kind of criminal justice reform.

I brought my sketchbook with me to observe the Songs in the Key of Free music workshop at Graterford Prison in Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to give inmates an opportunity to rediscover their humanity through music. From the sketchbook drawings I made that day, I created one panel that got divided into fourths to run through the piece. The panel as whole, seen here, was distributed as a poster.
